jG is the producer/DJ alias of artist/musician Joshua Gabriel. Long known on the NY underground for his D&B/hip-hop mixtapes, maze-like line drawings, and multi-instrumental live performances, jG's original tracks fall into no particular genre and combine raw, organic drum beats and heavy bass lines with layers of found sounds and his own guitar/percussion playing. After doing a remix of Saul Williams 'NGH WHT' poem (featured on saulwilliams.com) 2009 finds jG coming with 2 new funky yet dark compositions that sound like nothing else in the musical landscape.
BIO: Born and raised in the City of Brotherly Soul, jG moved to Brooklyn in '98, taught himself to mix and scratch, and slipped a mixtape to Hipstep Massive co-founder DJ Scorpio at a party. Scorpio called him that week and began putting him on at several weekly D&B parties. During this time jG put out 3 classic mixtapes, the third taking 2nd place in a BPM Magazine mixtape contest. Serious heads began to take notice his original DJ style - a raw, original blend of hard drum n bass & hip-hop, with touches of opera, classical guitar and spoken word composed into the mix. As early as 2000 jG was doing live remixes using Mobb Deep acapella's over fast, hardstep tracks. In 2000 and 2001, jG self-released 2 albums of original compositions (titled 'Movement I' and II respectively). Though highly influenced by hip-hop, D&B, trip-hop and DJ Shadow, Joshua's originals didn't fit into any particular electronic genre, and were heavy on organic drum loops, layers of female vocal samples, and his own percussion and guitar playing. Both albums charted on CMJ and 'Movement No, II' received several rave reviews, including a feature story in the New York Press which stated "This album demands and inspires close attention." Online magazine SPLENDID wrote "imagine a one-man Avalanches who doesn't bother with the melodies." In 2003 jG began a weekly party called 'The Beatdown" at the Black Betty in Willamsburg, Brooklyn with partner DJ/Beatboxer JASE (Mason). The Beatdown ran for 2 years and featured a technique jG invented where he would play the turntables and percussion simultaneously, using the crossfader to cut out the last measure of a beat which he would play on the bongos. After retiring this party jG turned his attention to singing, writing lyrics and more guitar driven, songwriter work (but always with those hard jG Beats setting the groove) He has put out 2 CDs and and EP in this style. The latest of these 'Walk the Plank' has garnered attention in certain circles and is available for free download from joshuagabriel.com. In 2007 jG moved to San Francisco and continues to write songs, produce tracks, DJ and draw.
