Admittedly, we hate this word, "Electronica" - it's lame. It was made up by music journalists in the mid-'90s who, desparate for "The Next Big Thing," figured they could convince mainstream American rock fans that their genre had died (again); and was being replaced henceforth by it's heir apparent: Electronic Dance Music. The Chemical Brothers did appear on the cover of Rolling Stone, and subsequently on the playlist at frat parties nationwide, establishing them a permanent place amongst the few wussy Brit electronic acts deemed safe for enjoyment by homophobes. The promise, however, of all the rock fans suddenly eating pills, doning fat pants and renouncing Meatloaf in favor of Fat Boy Slim was perhaps, overtstated, and Electronic Dance Music in the U.S. quickly receeded to the underground, where it has lived happily even since. Funny thing is, although the hype was for naught, the less than authentic moniker it branded the music with, stuck. So, until someone comes up with a better genre title, (suggestions welcome,) this is where you will find otherwise uncategorizable, electronically produced pop music.
